Umesh Sharraf did his schooling at St Xavier’s Bokaro; B.Tech. (Mechanical Engg.) from I.I.T. Kanpur in 1985; P.G.D.M. from I.I.M. Ahmedabad in 1987 and joined the Indian Police Service in 1989. While in service, he completed L.L.B. from Kakatiya and S.K.Universities.

He has worked as Asst. Superintendent of Police in Jagtial in Karimnagar District; as Addl. Superintendent of Police (Operations) Warangal and Karimnagar; as Superintendent of Police in Adilabad and Anantapur districts and in State Intelligence at Hyderabad and as Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Zone) in Hyderabad. As Dy. Inspector General of Police, he worked as DIG (Economic Offences) in CID at Hyderabad, as Commissioner of Police at Vijayawada and as Additional Director of the Anti Corruption Bureau at Hyderabad. As Inspector General of Police he worked as Addl. Director A.P. Police Academy, Jt. M.D. of AP TRANSCO, IG (E.O.W) and I.G. (Personnel) A.P. at Hyderabad. On promotion as ADG, he worked as Addl. D.G. (Personnel) of A.P. and after the bifurcation of the State he held the charges of Personnel, Organisation and the Police Recruitment Board of Telangana. He worked as Joint Director of the National Police Academy from 2015 to 2020. He is presently DG SPF Telangana.

He is the recipient of the United Nations Peace Medal 1999, Internal Security Medal 2004, Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Services 2005, the National Vigilance Excellence Awards in 2010 & 2011, the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Services 2014, FICCI SMART Policing Award 2017, Union Home Minister’s Medal for Excellence in Training 2019 and the Home Ministry’s Ati Utkrisht Seva Medal 2021. He has also received commendation discs from Director National Police Academy thrice and by DG Bureau of Police Research & Development twice. His books on “Criminology & Crime Prevention” and “Investigation of Economic Offences” are used extensively in training institutions and by other stakeholders. He has authored 22 papers in peer reviewed journals.

Umesh Sharraf retired on 30 th June,2023. His wife Rekha is a homemaker. His son Shikhar is an Oncologist and daughter Kopal is a lawyer. They are settled in Hyderabad.
